Lena kicks ReRe’s injured ass to defend Sydney title

Well now, that’s just awesome!

Elena Dementieva heavily defeated World #1 Serena Williams 6-3, 6-2 earlier today to successfully defend her Sydney title. The match was pretty interesting. One of the standouts in my opinion was Lena’s serve. Every tennis fan worth their salt knows that it’s normally a load of bollocks, but today, it was consistently good. I think she must have worked her cute Russian ass off during the off season, cos even her ball toss is much improved. Good for her. ReRe is definitely carrying a knee injury of some sort, she had strapping on it, and her movement was laboured. But for reals, I think that even without the injury Lena would have won. She was just on today, and has been all week. She always seems to play well Down Under. In truth, she looks great heading into the AO, but I refuse to say more than that in case I jinx her.

ReRe should be good to go at the AO, but whether or not it’s because of her dodgy knee, she hasn’t looked great this week. Her runner’s up speech was total fucking FAIL. Arrogant bitch. One lowlight was: “I’ve never really been runner-up too often, so I dunno what to say…erm yeah.” Jaysus. Yet more proof that money doesn’t buy class. Try taking a leaf out of your sister’s book on how to be gracious in defeat, Serena.

Gah. The Aussie Open can’t come quick enough.

If The AO Is Half This Crazy, Buckle Up

Thursday’s play (or in some cases, lack of play) in Sydney was full of more drama and upsets. Stan had to withdraw from his match against Julien because of a neck strain. Feli wasn’t able to play dubs because his partner, Jonathan Erlich had a “right rib” problem. Poor Feli, he’s not going to be very prepared for the AO compared to the other boys.

In “people who actually played” news, my boys T-Berd and Viktor were both upset by Peter Luczak and Marcos, respectively. Bummer. But there was a bit if good news, as Richie continued his comeback by defeating #8 seed Benjamin Becker in straight sets. With injured seeds Monf and Stan out of the tourney, Richie has an easy path straight to the final. Woot!

I hope he wins the whole thing!

On the (always crazy) WTA side, it was quarterfinal day. Vika yet again tried to kill her fans by struggling against Domi in an unnecessarily long 3-set match. But at least she made the semis, right? And this picture might be the best pic I’ve ever seen:

Work it, girl.

In the other QFs, Dina was knocked out by Lena D in pretty convincing fashion, 6-2, 6-3. Oh, and there was the little part about my girl Aravane bageling Flavs. She pretty well destroyed Flavs, 6-3, 6-0. Of course no one saw what happened because it wasn’t televised, but I’m wondering what the hell happened. Hopefully Aravane was just playing insanely good, because she’s going to need to play even better against Serena tonight.

Dina actually beats a Top Tenner; Sydney results

Well, would ya look at that.

Dinara won a match against A-Rad earlier today, in what can best be described as a typical WTA shitfest. Dina’s serve was woeful, Aga served for the first set three times and failed everytime, and Radwanska’s attempts volleys were increasingly embarrassing.  On a positive note, Dinara hit a few clean winners, and didn’t look at Zeljko like he was her God. So ya know, that’s an improvement on ’09 for a start. I love Dina, and would love to see her do well.

Wednesday’s OOP looks awesome, with HSM faves Richard Gasquet, Flavia Pennetta and Aravane Rezai all in action. Also? Vika vs Domi should be epic win;

Sydney, Wednesday 13th 2010 Order Of Play

Suck It, ITF.

What’s this? The WTA all-Belgian week. Yanina Wickmayer beat Flavs in the Auckland final, 6-3, 6-2.  As you all must have heard and read, Yanina had her one-year ban (a fucking stupid ban) for anti-doping violations overturned.  She received a last minute Wild Card for Auckland and comes out with the title. Nice Story.

Sad for Flavs and for Emma since she loves her so much. Still a good week for her. She played great all week but Yanina was better in the final.

Forza!

The WTA Saviors

You know that’s what you’re going to hear everywhere. Just like old times. Kim and JuJu met in a final that makes you go all warm and fuzzy inside. It was 2 hours and 24 minutes of great tennis and momentum swings, that finished in a 3rd set TB with both ladies saving match points.  Kim saved 2 mps, while JuJu saved 3. Kim started strong taking a 4-1 lead that she almost choked away, but still won the 1st set, 6-3. Then JuJu started to play like her old self and won the 2nd set, 6-4. In the 3rd set JuJu started strong with a 3-0 lead but Kim rallied back, making it 3-3. She gave Juju mps in the 10th game, but Kim stayed strong and held her nerve. Juju was able to push it to a TB, which Kim won, 7-6(6). Kim’s AO chances are looking really good.

Warning: Pic Spam ahead.

 Obligatory Jada pic. So cute.

Pure Class.

Yeah, Yeah. You Get Your Dream Final.

I expected so much more from this match, but this IS the WTA after all. The match was crap. Crap, I tell you. Anita played like shit, and so did JuJu. The small moments of brilliance from Juju won her the match. The “OMFG I’m playing Justine Henin” virus that Ana had was another big factor. I like Justine, I really do- but I wanted Ana to win. (FIX THAT BALL TOSS ANA!) If the fellow Ana fans or Justine haters want to rant and hate go ahead, use the comments for it. That’s what we’re here for.

In the other semi, Kim won her match against Petkovic. I didn’t see the match, so I can’t really comment on it. From what I’ve seen from Kim this week, she has looked great. So, people will get the all-Belgian final that they have been praying for since they first saw that the old rivals were playing Brisbane.  Justine vs. Kim, just like old times. Bring it!

On the ATP, they played the 2 quarter-finals that were left. Dick beat Richie- sad face. But regardless, Brisbane was a good tournament for Richie. Andy will play the winner of the other quarter-final, Berdy.

He beat one of my weird ATP crushes Thomaz Bellucci. I was kind of surprised that Thomaz made it this far. He usually sucks on hard-courts. The dude is a clay-courter all the way. Good result for him.

Don’t worry bb, the South American clay-court swing is just around the corner.

Fist Pumps For Everybody

Look who won in straight sets. This girl.

The best I’ve seen Anita play in a long, long time. The first serve was great, the forehand and the slice were working. Well, until she was serving for the match. She was up 5-3 in the second, then the nerves started to kick in. Pavs broke back and I started to swear my ass off. I was expecting a 3rd set after that, but thank Sven, she was able to pull out the TB and win the match.

You did your best kid, better luck next time.

Anita’s price for winning and making her first semi final since Indian Wells? Having to play this chick:

I haven’t been able to see JuJu play, but according to reports (aka my Twitter buddies) she hasn’t been playing that fantastic. She won in a 3rd set TB against Czink. It seems Czink was hit by the virus that’s been going around- the “OMFG I’m playing Justine Henin”. Does Anita have a chance against JuJu? I think she does, since anything is possible. I’m a big JuJu fan but Anita needs this more. So I’ll be rooting for Ana as beating Justine would do wonders for her confidence. Even if she loses, it’s still a great result for Anita. Ajde!

On the ATP side there where only two singles matches. Defending champion Steps won in straights against Odesnik. The most important thing that happened: Mr. Entertainment took out Mr. Boring. LaMonf beat Blah in 3 sets, so I’m happy about that.

Dude, even his fist pumps are boring
